An American occupation soldier was killed and two others injured in a bomb explosion near their patrol in Baghdad, the U.S. military said Sunday.

The incident took place on Friday when an improvised explosive device struck the soldiers' patrol in the capital at approximately 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT), a military statement said.

The name of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the statement said.

More than 4,135 U.S. occupation soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
