The Iraqi High Criminal Tribunal decided to postpone the trial of journalist Muntadhar al-Zaydi until the Federal Supreme Court decides over the case.

Spokesperson of the Supreme Judicial council Abdul Sattar al-Berqdar said in a press statement Tuesday that the IHCT has decided to postpone the trial in accordance with the appeal submitted by the defendant’s lawyers to the Federal Supreme Court.

For his part, the legal expert Tariq Harb clarified “Zaydi’s issue will be reviewed by the Iraqi High Criminal Tribunal in accordance with its authorities stipulated in article 164 of the judicial procedures law.”

Other procedures will be valid such as continuation of Zaydi's detention until setting a new date for the trial which would take no less than two weeks, he added.

Al-Zaydi was supposed to attend the trial next Wednesday for throwing his shoes on the U.S President George W. Bush during a press conference held in Baghdad on December 14.
