Gunmen opened fire on the Israeli Embassy in the West African nation of Mauritania on Friday morning, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
The gunmen fled after government guards fired back, the spokesman said. A bystander was shot, but no embassy employees were wounded, according to the ministry. The number of gunmen was not immediately known. The embassy is located in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. Two witnesses told The Associated Press the shooting was done by a group of men shouting "God is Great!" in Arabic before opening fire about 2 a.m. Predominantly Muslim Mauritania formally opened diplomatic relations with Israel in 2000 and is one of only three Arab League members to have done so, according to the U.S. State Department.
